Education & Work History
Charles Holloway was educated at Winchester College (1963-8) and at University College, Oxford (1969-72) where he read law, trained with Allen & Overy in the City of London and became a Solicitor in 1975.
After 3 years' experience in the City as a qualified solicitor, he moved to Hill & Perks in Norwich in 1979 and became a partner in 1981. The firm subsequently became Daynes Hill & Perks in 1987 and he returned to practice in London to take responsibility for the newly launched London office between 1988 and 1992. The firm became Eversheds in due course.
After 25 years, Charles left Eversheds at the end of 2003 to join Steeles in Norwich and London where he was a partner and Head of Inquiries and Investigations before leaving to set up his own business at the end of 2005. Since then, he has been advising a wide range of businesses both in the public and the private sectors as a consultant. He is also an accredited mediator with ADR Chambers.
Highlights
1973 – 1974: Summerland Fire Inquiry
Acted for an interested party through its insurers at 4 month public inquiry in the Isle of Man chaired by Mr Justice Cantley.
1978: Acted for the Independent Broadcasting Authority in the case of IBA v EMI Electronics Limited 11 BLR 29 (CA)
1979 – 1987: Acting for a number of substantial clients in the construction and commercial litigation field and for insurers in defended personal injury cases. Acted for local authorities and in a multi party, multi million pound dispute for a national window manufacturer and supplier. Other significant cases included Cole v Crown Poultry Packers Limited (1983) 133 NLJ 400.
1988 – 1992: Partner in Charge of new London Office for Daynes Hill & Perks, subsequently Eversheds.
Acting for international commercial and private clients in a wide range of matters including construction, general commercial litigation, arbitration and personal injury. Also overseeing an office move/merger.
1992 – 1998: Practised in Norwich acting for a wide range of insurance companies and commercial clients.
Significant cases include Banco Exterior Internacional SA v Thomas (1997) 1 WLR 221 and Banco Exterior Internacional v Mann (1995) 1 All ER 936 relating to mortgagees’ powers and duties/undue influence/fiduciary relationships.
Secondment to Banco Exterior de Espana in Madrid for 3 months (1992) working in the international division, including dealing with the Bank of England and also domestically in relation to recoveries and litigation in the Juzgados de Primera Instancia in Madrid.
1998 – 2004: Bloody Sunday Inquiry
Responsible for setting up the inquiries and investigations department nationally and internationally.
1998: Partner in Charge of Litigation in the newly opened Cambridge Office
1999 – 2000: Harold Shipman Inquiry
1999 – 2003: Head of Litigation, Eversheds East of England.
Responsible for reorganisation of working methods in the department, mentoring senior solicitors and for recruitment of staff, overseeing promotions, disciplinary procedures and appraisals. Also responsible for marketing.
Member of Eversheds National Litigation Group.
Visited Singapore with two members of the International Records Management Trust and the Principal Registrar of the High Court of the Gambia (2002) to examine the improvements to records and information systems then being undertaken by the Judiciary in Singapore and to test a prototype assessment tool for legal and judicial records and information systems. The project was a World Bank / IRMT partnership project and produced a report.
2004 to 2005: Steeles Law LLP, East Anglia & London Principal and Head of Inquiries and Investigations.
2006 to present: Accredited Mediator and Consultant.
2007 Accepted an invitation to join the Resolex Panel of Mediators.
2007 Appointed a director of Millnet Financial Limited.
International work
Considerable experience of working in the Spanish speaking world including Spain, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela and Mexico as well as Portugal and Brazil. Also worked on projects in the United States and Bangladesh.
